What is a red flag for Back Pain?

A "red flag" is a warning sign that a person's back pain may be caused by a more serious underlying condition rather than a simple muscle strain or injury.

Here are a few examples of red flags for back pain:

Recent significant trauma: If you've recently been in a car accident, fallen, or experienced another type of substantial trauma, this could be a red flag for a severe injury.

Unexplained weight loss: Sudden, unexplained weight loss can signify a severe underlying condition, such as cancer.

Night pain or pain that disrupts sleep: Pain that is worse at night or makes it difficult to sleep can be a red flag for a serious condition.

Weakness, numbness or tingling in one or both legs: This could be a sign of nerve or spinal cord compression. Both conditions need prompt attention.

Bladder or bowel dysfunction: Difficulty urinating, incontinence or other changes in bowel or bladder function can be red flags for a severe condition.

Fever or signs of infection: If you have a fever or other signs of infection, such as redness or warmth at the site of your pain, this could be a red flag for a serious condition.

It's important to note that one or more red flags do not necessarily mean you have a severe condition. However, if you have any red flags, you should seek medical attention as soon as possible to rule out any underlying illnesses and for proper management.
