How are Migraines different from Headaches?
Here are a few ways migraines differ from headaches:
Intensity and duration: Migraines are typically more severe and longer-lasting than headaches. A migraine headache can last anywhere from 4 to 72 hours, while a typical headache usually lasts less than 4 hours.
Symptoms: Migraines often have additional symptoms, such as visual disturbances called auras, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light, sound or smell. On the other hand, headaches typically do not have these additional symptoms.
Causes: Migraines are often caused by changes in the brainstem and its interactions with the trigeminal nerve, a major pain pathway. Triggers can include hormonal changes, certain foods, stress, bright lights and certain odours, changes in sleep patterns and more. The causes of headaches can vary, including tension, muscle strain, and sinus pressure.
Diagnosis: Migraines are based on symptoms and diagnostic criteria like the International Headache Society (IHS) criteria, while clinical examination can diagnose headaches.
