What are the 3 types of Migraines?
There are several types of migraines, each with unique symptoms and characteristics. However, here are three of the most common types:
Migraine with aura: Also called classic migraine, this type of migraine is characterized by a warning sign, called an aura, that occurs before the headache. Auras can include visual disturbances such as flashing lights, blind spots, or zigzag lines, as well as tingling or numbness in the face or hands. The headache typically follows the aura within 60 minutes and can last up to 72 hours.
Migraine without aura: This is the most common type of migraine, also called common migraine. It is characterized by a severe headache, typically on one side of the head, nausea, vomiting, and sensitivity to light and sound. There are no auras or warning signs with this type of migraine.
Chronic migraine: This type of migraine is defined as a migraine headache that occurs on 15 or more days per month for at least 3 months and in which headaches with migraine characteristics occur for 8 or more days per month. People with chronic migraine may experience symptoms that differ from episodic migraine and need different treatment approaches.
It is important to note that these are not the only types of migraines; a person can have migraines with different or multiple types simultaneously. Additionally, there are other subtypes, such as Vestibular migraines, Hemiplegic migraines, Retinal migraines, and more.
