Why does my Back Hurt so much Postpartum?

There are several reasons why your back might be hurting postpartum:

The strain on muscles and ligaments: Pregnancy and childbirth can strain the muscles and ligaments of the lower back and pelvis muscles, leading to pain and discomfort.

Hormonal changes: During pregnancy, the body produces a hormone called relaxin, which helps to loosen the joints and ligaments in preparation for childbirth. After delivery, this hormone can cause the joints to become unstable and lead to pain.

Postural changes: After pregnancy, your center of gravity shifts as your abdominal muscles weaken and your uterus contracts, which can cause increased stress on the lower back muscles and can cause pain.

Carrying the baby: Carrying and nursing the baby can strain your back, especially if you need to use proper posture or a carrier.

Stress on discs: During pregnancy, weight gain and hormonal changes can lead to changes in the spine. The discs between the vertebrae may bulge or herniate, leading to discomfort.

Sleep deprivation: Lack of sleep can exacerbate pain and make it harder to cope with the physical demands of caring for a new baby.

It's important to note that postpartum back pain is a shared experience, typically caused by the changes in your body due to pregnancy and childbirth. Still, it can be manageable with the proper care and treatment. Contact us today!
