How do I get my TMJ to stop hurting?
TMJ, or temporomandibular joint disorder, is a condition that can cause pain and discomfort in the jaw joint and surrounding muscles. The cause of TMJ can vary and may include issues such as arthritis, jaw injury, or grinding or clenching of the teeth.
To help alleviate TMJ pain, you can try the following:
Applying heat or ice packs to the jaw to help reduce inflammation and pain.
Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or progressive muscle relaxation, to help relax the jaw muscles.
Avoid activities that stress the jaw, such as chewing gum or eating tough or chewy foods.
Avoid grinding or clenching your teeth. If you have a habit of this, consider a night guard to prevent grinding.
Stretching and strengthening exercises can help improve the jaw muscles' range of motion and strength.
