What causes TMJ to flare up?
TMJ (temporomandibular joint) flare-ups can be caused by a variety of factors, including:
Stress can cause people to clench or grind their teeth, putting extra pressure on the TMJ and leading to pain and discomfort.
Arthritis is inflammation of the joint and can cause pain and stiffness in the TMJ.
Injury or trauma to the jaw, head, or neck can cause TMJ problems.
Misalignment of the teeth or jaw: This can cause uneven pressure on the TMJ, leading to pain and discomfort.
Bruxism refers to the habit of unconsciously grinding or clenching the teeth, especially at night.
Tension headaches, migraines and other headaches
Some medical conditions like fibromyalgia, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or other systemic diseases can lead to muscle tension, pain and stiffness.
Poor posture, for example, forward head posture, can cause muscle tension and spasm in the neck and head, leading to TMJ pain.
In osteoarthritis, the joints may wear down as people age, leading to pain and stiffness.
